URGENT CALL FOR DONATIONS! SOON, THE DOGS SUFFER FROM HUNGER!

January was less than two weeks old and there were already 12 new dogs in the Sanctuary.
Winter is always the hardest time because there is the least money coming in. Currently there is only a few days food for the dogs and no money in the bank. Therefore this emergency, every bit of money is welcome!

Good news! Already 2 persons have offered by email to be a flightparter.
Who's next? The more animals find a new home, the fewer mouths to feed at Thassos.

Unfortunately some pictures and stories about the Sanctuary and the dogs are circulating saying that the animals are not well treated. Especially one of the dogs called Arabella.
This is our side of the story: Arabella is an old dog that has been treated for Leishmaniasis. If she takes her medicines she has no problems and is a happy dog.
Regrettably we came to a point that we had hardly money to feed the dogs, let alone for medicines. So Arabella stayed without Zylapour and started to loose her hair. In the meantime we managed to buy her medicines again and she responded immediately at the medication and already looks a lot better.

Sometimes we are forced to choose.
That's why we need your help to help as many animals as we can!

We'd like to say a big THANK YOU to the people, as well on the island as elsewhere, that donated generously so we can buy the necessary food for the animals !!! Without you we can't do it!

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Anna, one of our contacts in the Netherlands, Dierenhulp zonder Grenzen has started an initiative to help FOS. Meanwhile, this has already resulted in a donation!
We are obviously very happy and hope that more Dutch people want to support this action.

Unfortunately we had to stop the Facebook page today. We started it hoping to reach and inform more people, but the only result was a lot of negativity.
We will go on informing you through this website and will go on improving the organisation of FOS.
Hopefully with your help…

The AAI Foundation has sent us a donation of 500 Euro for the sterilization of dogs. A great gift at the right time, because lately we seem to get only new bitches.
We thank the AAI Foundation very very much!

Here a picture of a very happy Susan and Aaron.
They have long longed for good boots. Through the efforts of Anna from the Netherlands, who knew that they needed decent boots, the company Tigro 2 very nice pair of boots!
They fit perfectly, and Susan and Aaron are very grateful to the sponsor.
Anna has also sent in the parcel a microchip reader, donated by the company Dorset ID. We thank them also for giving us this much needed equipment!

So you see that FOS can be helped in more ways then only with money!
We still need a device (for repeated use!) to insert microchips. Maybe you know a company that would like to donate that to us?

As of today there is a new page added to the site: Activities.
In this way you can instantly see what FOS organizes.

A new FOS calendar for 2012 is ready!
To express how grateful we are, you get a calendar for every donation of 7 euro or more.
The calendars are only available on Thassos, but if you are willing to pay the postage of 3 euro we can send you one.
In that case please send us an before donating.

Recently FOS has received two generous donations from Friends of the Strays of Greece in England and from Restaurant-Cafe Bar Paradise Beach here on Thassos. We want to thank both very very much!

FOS was also present at the car boot sale Saturday in Limenas. Unfortunately there were very few stalls and very few visitors (perhaps because of the very cold weather).
But we still earned about 100 euros. Especially the homemade cakes were again very popular.
The proceeds of the evening with live Greek music in March brought FOS 150 euro's.
FOS thanks all volunteers who helped!

The profits of both events pays for only 3 days dog food, but every little bit counts! So do not think that we are not happy with 10 euro, because if every website visitor would give us 10 euro, the animals would have enough to eat for a while!

One of the dogs from the shelter, Candy, has found a new owner in
Limenas. It is always extra nice to have a dog replaced here on Thassos.

And hopefully Saturday four puppies will fly to Germany, on their way to
a new home.
Now the tourist season has started, we hope to bring as many dogs as possible with flight partners to Germany, where a new home for them is sought. So help us and sign up as a flight partner!
But if you're looking for a sweet dog yourself, there are enough dogs waiting in the shelter in Rachoni.

In 2007 Suzanne was sued by a shepherd who makes it a sport to thwart her whenever possible. This man had attacked her before and as self-defence or deterrent a German lady with good intentions gave Suzanne an electric shock weapon. On a bad day again the shepherd threatened Suzanne and she showed him the thing only with the intention to deter him. To be clear: she did not touch him!
The wily shepherd has sued Susan, and now, after years of court, is the statement that Suzanne has been convicted for possessing an illegal weapon.
The fine is 1,500 Euros! Money that FOS does not have! Alternatively, a six months and 10 days imprisonment, but that is even more disastrous. Not only for Susan but also for the animals, because who will take care of them?!?
On the entire island people are trying to stop the negative actions of the shepherd. But that does not pay the fine.
FOS hopes for your support and donations to keep Susan out of prison and the care for the dogs is guaranteed.

Despite all the discussions with the municipality until today nothing came of the pledges for assistance. There is no money, but the municipality would collect residual food in restaurants, bakeries, etc. and bring it to Rachoni.
Not so.
Yesterday it became even worse. The Sanctuary is located on the dirt road to the church of Agios Ioannis, which is only visited a few times a year by the villagers. This is one of the reasons that the road occasionally is being levelled by bulldozers, so that people can drive up with normal cars. Unfortunately they now used an enormous wide monster, which in several places damaged the water pipes to the Sanctuary. By ground movement, the pipes are also further buried under meters soil, so it is very difficult to find out where the problem is. Suzanne and Aaron have spent hours yesterday to get everything sort of repaired, as the municipality or the forest guard did nothing about it.
Suzanne just reported that the vice mayor would cast a glance at the problem today. Hopefully this results in a supply of new water pipes, because, as said: money is not there ...

The first pups have found there way to Germany, on their way to a new home. A few of them have found a loving family already! And all that thanks to the flightpartners; without them the dogs have to stay on Thassos in the Sanctuary, may be for the rest of their lifes.
So FOS wants to say a big Thank you to those people and hope that many more will offer us their help as flightpartner.
More about the experience of a flightpartner you can read on the Thassosforum.

How to say thank you for a donation if this is the result of loosing a daughter… That's why we publish the letter [click here] Gisela has written and let the content speak for itself.
FOS wishes Gisela and family a lot of strength to bear this loss and hopes that it will offer a bit comfort that with this generous gift Ramona will live on in the animals.
[translation of the letter: As you know, unfortunately our daughter and sister has died in February. She was taken to the hospital at 14-02-2011 in the morning and died the evening of 15-02 due to very severe pneumonia. At her funeral we have collected a lot of money for you, as Ramona would have wanted. She always wished she could do more for you, but unfortunately her finances didn't let her. We don't want to just hand over the money to you in cash, but in tools, building materials, dog food or what ever you need. Just tell us what you need and we will buy it for you, until all the money is used.]

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM SUZANNE INCE:
We would like to thank Klaus Franke for his help in obtaining homes in the past years for the many many puppies. His website made a huge difference to the homing of the unwanted pups of the island.
However, due to his refusal to produce satisfactory evidence of his use of donations, we have found it necessary to dispense with his services.

Good news from the Netherlands! Anna, who is supporting FOS in every way, now also committed to replace dogs from Thassos in the Netherlands. She has started a website to get more attention for the work of FOS and the home-seeking dogs of Thassos.
She flew four dogs last month herself to Düsseldorf. Three remained in Germany and Flour travelled to the Netherlands. Thanks to the support of a woman from Zeist which has provided temporary shelter, has Flour - now called Pippa - found a new loving home.
Hopefully this is just the beginning and many more will follow. Thank you Anna, for trying to find also homes in the Netherlands!

Of course FOS was present again on the annual Car Boot Sale in Limenas. In spite of the beautiful weather there were not many people but still we managed to sell for about 200 euro.
Thanks to all the volunteers that baked cakes or helped in any other way.
Next Car Boot Sale is planned for 21 April 2012.

Here a picture of one of the dogs that was so lucky to find a new home in Germany. It is clear that Blanca (before Cream Cake) is very happy with her new family.

Transport of the dogs isn't always easy, but sometimes everything goes wrong. Read the story of Anna Maria.
Anna Maria already missed 2 chances to go to Germany, but now she could finally leave. Klaus, living on Thassos, had to go to Germany and took her and some other dogs from the sanctuary with him in his car. But during a stop in Croatia Anna Maria managed to escape and in spite of long waiting and searching he couldn't find her. He had no choice then to move on with the other dogs.
Anna, who is doing a lot for FOS from The Netherlands, heard about this and together with an American lady that is living in Greece she made a poster that was spread in the area where Anna Maria disappeared. She didn't count on success but to her surprise after 10 days (!) her husband (who was mentioned as a contact on the poster) got a phone call. Anna Maria was found by Marjana Sovic, living in Zagreb, who was dedicated to the stray dogs there. Through Facebook she was told that a dog was walking around a petrol station, 200 km from the place where Anna Maria was lost! At the vet's the microchip proved that it was her.
After some research Anna found out that the dog could fly independently with Croation Airlines to Frankfurt. Anna and her husband made the long journey to Frankfurt to pick her up. But at arrival they were told that the passport was lost and that the papers were not in order. They needed a copy of the passport and the right health certificate, which could be requested in Zagreb, but also a blood test because the dog came from a not EU country. Anna did everything she could to sort it out, even contacted vet Nikos in Limenaria, but without result. After all the effort and waiting, Anna and her husband returned to The Netherlands with empty hands.
Next morning she called again with the airport and this time she could speak with the head of the animal transport. Meanwhile the passport was found. Again they made the trip to Frankfurt and this time, after a lot of paperwork and stamps, they could take Anna Maria with them.
For several days Anna Maria is (temporarily) at Anna's home and is doing very well. She is still a bit uncertain, but that is not surprisingly after such an adventure. Now she is waiting for a new home.
Anna and her husband have spent a lot of money to arrange all this and FOS has great respect for it.
Ideal would be that this story ends with a new loving home for Anna Maria. She is a cute little terrier bitch, toilet-trained, good with other dogs and of course sterilized and microchipped. So if you are looking for a dog why not have Anna Maria? You can contact Anna by email:

The Christmas Bazaar in Potos was a great success. Thanks to the beautiful weather and the help of the volunteers it resulted in € 650 for the animals!
