Here are some facts of 2011:
Last year 129 dogs came to the sanctuary (which is less than in 2010) and 72 dogs have been replaced.
With the help of Friends of the strays of Greece in England, all newly arrived females are spayed as soon as possible. A major worry less for FOS!
Most donation boxes have been emptied and the yield was approximately € 1.500!
All calendars for 2012 have been sold. So a big success.
Finally, we wish to thank all the volunteers who have assisted FOS in 2011. Without them, the animals can not be helped. We hope that we again in 2012 we can count on their help (big or small)!

Wolfgang (now called Wolf) has a new home! After some time in the Sanctuary and before chained as 'watchdog' at a hotel in Limenaria, the 7-year-old Wolf finally found a loving home. By Dirk and Nicole Bernard (our helpers in Germany) he has a wonderful life with a loving family in the Netherlands. Since he is not accustomed to live in the house, there are some minor problems, but that just needs some time. He loves rides in the car and to be stroked.
More stories about lucky dogs who have found a good home can be found on the website of Dirk and Nicole

Suzanne is unable to go to the sanctuary. The dogs had their last full meal on Monday. Tuesday there was snow and it is bitterly cold and windy. Yesterday Suzanne waited all day for the council to clear the road as she could not take the new bought food up to the mountains.
The mayor of Thassos assured that the road would be cleared but nothing happened. Suzanne was finally told that the road wouldn't be cleared and that it was her own responsibility as she knew that it would snow. She was supposed to be prepared and have extra food up in the Sanctuary. But how can you buy food if there is no money at that time??? When Suzanne said she would free the dogs, they responded that the police would be send.
Finally Suzanne decided to borrow money and buy snow chains. Extra costs, but the food has to get up in the mountains. Unfortunately the car got off the road and is stuck now, so the dogs still don't have any food.

The road is cleared and the food is up at the shelter! Sometimes you need some luck.
A few sheep were killed by loose dogs and because Suzanne has threatened the mayor to free the dogs, the shepherd thought it were hers and called the mayor. When they found out that it were other dogs the mayor could do nothing else then clear the road for Suzanne. We are sorry for the shepherd and the sheep but they have saved the life of the dogs in the Sanctuary.
Other fantastic news is that Anna in Holland managed to get the help of the Dutch organisation WereldAsielen. They are so good to donate a large amount money for animal food, which gives FOS the chance to buy more food before the next (expected) snow fall. The organisation also promised to keep on supporting FOS.
That is really good news and we thank WereldAsielen very very much for their swift help!

This is how Rachoni looked this morning. As you can see there is a lot of snow up there.

We would like to remember all our members to pay their annual subscription of 25 euro as far as you haven't done already.
You can do so at:
FOS Thassos
Commercial Bank of Greece, Limenas, Thassos
IBAN: GR 4601207260000000084439550
BIC: EMPOGRAA

As always the winter is the most difficult time for FOS, moneywise but also because of the weather. But somehow we managed again. Still it needs about 2,000 euro each month only to feed the animals. With more then 100 members that covers just over a month, so we hope for donations as well.

Thanks to the mentioning of FOS on the website of www.dierenstages.nl in The Netherlands, Suzanne will have this year a lot of volunteers coming to help her. One of them, Daphne who is coming to Thassos in May, has even collected a lot of gifts.

Of course Suzanne is very happy with al these extra hands. And hopefully it will offer FOS the chance to finally make a well-documented overview of all the dogs in the shelter.

Now some good news: a few pictures of some Thassos dogs that found new homes in Germany. It is clear to see that they are enjoying their new lifes!

03-2012
Good news about the trial started in January 2007, when Suzanne was accused to have attacked a shepherd. By constantly postponing, no show of the counterparty and other bureaucratic issues, there is finally a verdict after years: Suzanne is not guilty. That is good news! Not so good is that all in all it has cost much money for (whether or not for nothing) travelling to the court and especially to attorney fees. Unfortunately there is  still € 450 to pay to the lawyer, money that FOS does not have...
