A day in the vet practice

The vet practice is located at the road from Limenaria to Kalivia across from the supermarket. Every morning Nikos is there and whenever needed Stathis comes over from Kavala to Thassos.
In the meantime a lot of Thassians appreciate the work of FOS, Nikos and Stathis. They bring their animals for check ups and sterilization.

If an animal is to be sterilized it gets anaesthetized and at the second picture  the animal is carefully held so that it can’t fall down when the anaesthetic starts to work.

At the sterilization of a cat the cat is tied down so that all 4 legs are splayed open so the belly is taut. You can see Kerstin assisting Stathis with this operation. Such operations are very difficult to be done alone and we are always standing close to Stathis supporting him as far as we can.
The cats move when they are asleep and when Stathis sets his scalpel he must be sure the cat can’t move. Also he can see much better when the belly is tightly stretched and he can find the womb easily. This isn’t an easy operation and often he needs all his power and knowledge but it looks worse than it is. Everything is part of sterilization.

After the animal is sterilized it will be put into a box or like here laid on a blanket to wake up very softly. This happens in complete silence and we keep a check on the animal until they fully recover.
Animals recover very quickly and cats are getting up again after two hours. We have a look at them as long as they recover completely.

Without Stathis and Nikos help we couldn’t do this important work. It would be impossible!
Our dog whisperer Suzanne

This picture of Suzanne just shows how much love and affection she puts into her work with the dogs. Yes, she is a dog whisperer and her dogs react in a very sensitive and warm-hearted way.

Every suffering, sick and maltreated animal finds a new caring home up in the mountains of Rachoni. It is quite a hard and exhausting work, but on this page we also want to show you that this work is a lot of fun, as well.

In the first picture you can see how delighted Suzanne is about the dogs’ affection. She treats the animals the way she wants to be treated. She gives love and gets love. Suzanne is very persistent and that’s what she, that’s what WE ALL need for our work for FOS.

The following picture show how Suzanne and Aaron have to handle their daily work every once in a while. When they do not have access to a car to get the animal food up in the mountains of Rachoni, they bring the load up there on horsebacks.
Food stations / steralization

On several places on Thassos we put food stations for stray cats. These need to be filled up all the time of course. They have a telephone number on it, so everybody can contact FOS if necessary.

Besides helping the cats through the winter, the food stations give us the opportunity to catch the stray cats for sterilization. Then the tip of their right ear will be cut off. Don't worry this won't hurt, because we do it during the narcosis. This helps to distinguish the sterilized cats from the other ones.
Sterilization is one of the main tasks to controll the number of cats a little bit and also decrease the chance of them being poisoned or unwanted kittens to be thrown away as garbage.
Afterwards the cats will be put back at the place where we picked them up.

The positive side of all this work is, that a lot of people on Thassos now bring their animals for sterilization or just a health check to the vet. And this is an important part of our job. To make that the people feel responsible for their animals and treat them well.
Donation boxes

All over Thassos we placed boxes for donations. In taverns, shops, at the vet's and many more places. Just one of the ways to collect money for the animals.
You can find our boxes in:
Limenas: Bar Rumours, Costas Pottery, Hotel Fournos, Villa G+T, Pantelis Supermarket, Star Supermarket, Leather Lane.
Kazaviti: Taverna Vasilis.
Skala Prinos: Real Holidays.
Limenaria: Car rental Speedy, Bet office Giorgos,  Petshop, the vet's clinic, Pelikanos.
Potos: Apartments Aegean Villas, Tavern Akrogiali, Hairdresser Stin Trixa, Supermarket Gagos, Supermarket Afroditi.
Food Transport

With more than 100 dogs it’s a big challenge to get the food in the mountains to where Suzanne is living. Unfortunately she has no suitable car and is dependent on help, like our sponsors lending us cars – like this Jeep here - or kind people with a bigger car buying food and bringing it up to Rachoni.
Suzanne’s area is far above Rachoni village and the way is driven well in summertime when it is dry outside. But if it’s raining, snowing or the ground is frozen a 4 x 4 Jeep is necessary.
We would like to thank all kindest Thassians, supporting us with borrowed cars and donated food.
A few to mention - car rental Speedy, Supermarket Latsouris who brings the food for free as long as it is more then 30 bags, the bakery with food donations along with the restaurant owners and many, many more...
Don't forget that nowadays (2010) it costs € 65 per day to feed the dogs only! So we are grateful for all the help and donations we can get!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SUPPORTING US !!!!
